The BIEN 3 database consists of two sets of tables: (1) a core database, containing the raw, normalized data, and (2) an analytical database, consisting of alternative denormalized views of the data from the core database, optimized for use in specific analyses. Most users will interact with the analytical database.

Analytical database
The heart of the BIEN 3 analytical database is the table analytical_aggregate. This table aggregates species observations both plots and specimens within localities, and is therefore equivalent to the BIEN 2 table `observation` (or `viewFullOccurrence`), very similar in structure. You can access the original table in PostgreSQL on server vegbiendev, or a copy in MySQL on server nimoy.
