The following table lists the sources of specimen and plot data used to prepare the above models and maps for 90,419 New World plant species ranges (including the 88,824 species modelled by John Donoghue and collaborators; see Download). The contents of this table can also be downloaded as a spreadsheet: speciesModelledSources.xlsx

In addition to the name of the source in the BIEN2 database, the spreadsheet lists the type of source (plot or specimen), the number of observations from that source, and whether or not the source name is a standard Index Herbariorum acronym (isHerbarium=1). I recommend acknowledging all herbaria by acronym. Further research may be required to determine the meaning of specimen source names which are not herbarium acronyms. Citation of source for plot data may involve acknowledging individuals rather than source names, and should be discussed further at the next BIEN meeting.

Most BIEN specimen observations were derived from global data indexers such as GBIF; source names are shown as provided by the indexers and may not correspond to standard institution abbreviations or acronyms. Many GBIF indexed specimen records cite more than one source (perhaps due to duplicate specimens); for this reason, the total number of observations listed on the spreadsheet will be somewhat larger than the number of observations in the BIEN2 database.
