BIEN 4.0 was released on May 9, 2018. Improvements include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More data:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>18,844,855 more observations (23% increase)<\/li>\n<li>25 million more trait measurements (an 18-fold increase!)<\/li>\n<li>Improved coverage of southern South America<\/li>\n<li>New data sources from Eurasia, Africa and Australia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expanded metadata<\/strong>, including more detailed information on methods and provenance of trait data. See the <a href=\"http:\/\/bien.nceas.ucsb.edu\/bien\/biendata\/private-data-dictionary\/\">BIEN 4 data dictionary<\/a> for details.<\/li>\n<li><strong>New validations and standardizations:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bien.nceas.ucsb.edu\/bien\/tools\/gnrs\/\"><strong>GNRS (Geographic Name Resolution Service):<\/strong><\/a> Standardization of political division names in accordance with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geonames.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GeoNames<\/a> standards<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dates:<\/strong> Dates parsed and extracted to yyyy-mm-dd format, with support for \"fuzzy dates\" (e.g., month but no day). Original values preserved for comparison and further resolution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elevation:<\/strong> Altitudes parsed and converted to meters, with support for ranges. Original values preserved for comparison and further resolution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved validations:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bien.nceas.ucsb.edu\/bien\/tools\/nsr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NSR (Native Species Resolver)<\/a>:<\/strong> Expanded reference database now provides native\/introduced status assessments for taxon occurrences in the majority of New World countries.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bien.nceas.ucsb.edu\/bien\/tools\/taxonomic-name-resolution-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TNRS (Taxonomic Name Resolution Service):<\/a><\/strong> Improved filtering of higher taxa removes non-plant names in source database that were previously fuzzy matched to land plant names. Support for fungus and algal taxonomy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Complete, raw validation results<\/strong> are available for querying<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are two ways to access and download publicly accessible data within BIEN 4:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/biendata.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>biendata.org<\/strong> <\/a>to access and visualize BIEN data (observations, traits, geographic ranges, plots) on a per species basis<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cran.r-project.org\/web\/packages\/BIEN\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R BIEN <\/a><\/strong>&#8211; For multi species queries of all BIEN data.
